Meet the Producer: Sonoma Baking Company

Sonoma Baking Company has been trading at the Carriageworks Farmers Market since its inception. Famous for their artisan sourdough loaves, Sonoma has bakeries scattered across NSW, and even one in Canberra. Now, they’re taking the Sonoma brand abroad with their new TV series, For the Love of Bread, which airs on SBS Food Sundays at 5.30pm, and on SBS on Demand. We sat down with them to chat about trading at the market.

Can you tell us a bit about your sourdough?

What we put into every loaf of sourdough sounds pretty simple: freshly milled flour, filtered water, our precious sourdough, starter and sea salt. Aside from a few other ingredients, we then add the not so simple bit: over 22 years’ worth of experience, shaped by knowledge gleaned from experts and time spent baking countless loaves. Not to mention the integrity and passion that comes from doing what you love, day in, day out. Taste our bread and we’re sure you’ll agree…this is no ordinary sourdough.

What is Sonoma famous for?

Our signature Sonoma Miche loaf is characterised by a distinct smoky flavour. It has a dark caramelised and blistered crust and an open and chewy crumb.

We also run seasonal specials where we put a spotlight on a cause i.e., December last year our Panettone included native Australian ingredients all sourced from producers focussed on supporting First Nations communities, like South Australia’s Something Wild.

What makes your bread stand out?

Bread kicked off our passion for other artisan foods. Today, we are just as well known for our handcrafted pastries and get-out-of-bed-good muesli. And like our bread, you can always expect fresh, wholesome ingredients, along with signature Sonoma flavours you will not find anywhere else.

What’s your favourite thing about trading at the Carriageworks Farmers Market?

The sense of community, and also the opportunity to be amongst some of the leading local producers and artisan makers.
