LE DERNIER APPEL (THE LAST CRY)
CARRIAGEWORKS AND MARRUGEKU PRESENT
LE DERNIER APPEL
(THE LAST CRY)
Carriageworks and Marrugeku presents the World Premiere of Le Dernier Appel (The Last Cry), a rumination on how dance in the Asia Pacific region is transfigured by decolonization, performed by dancers of First Nation, immigrant and settler descent from Australia and New Caledonia.
‘Colonisation has shaped us. To undo the past is impossible. Decolonisation is both necessary and a false goal. As older ways of life deteriorate, situations become increasingly urgent, yet progress is painfully slow. While governments debate, peoples born of invasion, migration and displacement, wait for the new day.’
– Serge Aime Coulibaly (Director and Choreographer), Dalisa Pigram (Choreographer), & Rachael Swain (Dramaturg)
Inspired by the questions arising out of the New Caledonian referendum on independence, Le Dernier Appel explores old and new knowledge as power is reconfigured. The work features design by New Caledonian artist Nicolas Mole and music by Ngaiire, Nick Wales and Bree van Reyk. After it is performed at Carriageworks the work will travel to New Caledonia’s Centre Culturel Tjibaou Noumea as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations.
