CARRIAGEWORKS AND BRESICWHITNEY COMMISSION ARTIST SAMUEL HODGE | MEDIA RELEASE 14 Apr 2015

Carriageworks, together with visual arts program partner BresicWhitney, have commissioned Sydney based contemporary artist Samuel Hodge to create a series of 30 photographic works celebrating the diverse communities and unique character of inner Sydney’s Redfern. The commissioned works will be shared as part of an Instagram competition encouraging people to share their own images inspired by Redfern with the hashtag #redfernlife.

The initiative marks the first collaboration between Sydney based lifestyle property group BresicWhitney and Redfern based Carriageworks, Australia’s most ambitious contemporary art and cultural precinct. BresicWhitney are the inaugural Carriageworks visual arts program partner supporting a range of Australian and international art projects throughout 2015.

Samuel Hodge will capture 30 photographic images on film that explore the contemporary character of Redfern’s places and people. The images will be shared through the Carriageworks and BresicWhitney Instagram accounts over four weeks commencing Tuesday 14 April 2015.

Lisa Havilah, Carriageworks Director, commented: “We are excited to be working with BresicWhitney on this unique project with respected Sydney artist Samuel Hodge. Through this initiative we hope to encourage people to share their own images of Redfern on social media, building a visual tapestry of the diverse and evolving face of Carriageworks’ home suburb.”

“This project will gather a diverse range of visual images that reflect the cultural complexities of Redfern and the diverse mix of communities who live in the suburb that is based on Gadigal land,” added Ms Havilah.

Shannan Whitney, Director of BresicWhitney, said: “BresicWhitney is proud to be involved with the concretion of new commissioned work and for the opportunity to celebrate local artists, people and the suburb of Redfern.”

“We acknowledge Carriageworks as an ambitious and risk taking arts organisation that is able through its artistic program to give a voice to Sydney’s social and cultural diversity, and to share poignantly Australian stories,” added Mr Whitney.

Commissioned artist Samuel Hodge, said “I’m excited to undertake this commission and to work with Carriageworks, BresicWhitney and the local Redfern community. This isn’t going to be a direct comment on Redfern, but more a fantastical parallel universe of the suburb in collaboration with its locals.”

The winner of the #redfernlife Instagram competition will be announced Thursday 14 May across Carriageworks and BresicWhitney social media channels and will receive a 10 year Friends membership to Carriageworks along with an original photographic print from the commission by Samuel Hodge. The competition is open from 14 April until 13 May 2015.
