TEHCHING HSIEH: ONE YEAR PERFORMANCE 1980-1981

The presentation of One Year Performance 1980-1981 (commonly referred to as Time Clock Piece) at Carriageworks marks the first time a major solo work by Tehching Hsieh has been presented in Australia. This extraordinary work, the second of his One Year Performances, follows Hsieh as he punched a time clock in his studio, every hour on the hour, twenty-four hours a day, for an entire year.

The installation comprises the documents the artist produced (photographs, film, time cards, statements) as he observed the passing of time in this relentlessly methodical manner over a gruelling year-long period. Celebrated Taiwanese-American performance artist Tehching Hsieh is internationally recognised as a leading practitioner of durational performance. Hsieh explores questions of time, life and being and his works are notable for their conceptual purity and physical extremity.

‘IN THE ONE YEAR PERFORMANCES, HSIEH DID NOT MAKE HIS LIFE HIS ART. INSTEAD, WITH CLASSICAL PRECISION AND UNQUESTIONABLE MONSTROUSNESS, HE EXPANDED HIS ART UNTIL IT FULLY OCCUPIED, CONSUMED AND SUSPENDED HIS LIFE.’ THE NEW YORK TIMES
