CARRIAGEWORKS PRESENTS
SONGS FROM NORTHAM AVENUE
LIVE SHOW
8pm, Sat 29 Apr, $15+bf
See Toby Martin, front man of Sydney band Youth Group, launch ‘Songs From Northam Avenue’ along with musical collaborators: Dang Lan, Mohammed Lelo, Adnaan Baraky, Bree van Reyk, Zoe Haputmann and Cameron Emerson-Elliott.
Inspired by the people of Bankstown, the album emerged from a songwriting residency commissioned by Urban Theatre Projects. From the front yards of Northam Avenue, to Michael K’s mixed business and coffee shop on Chapel Road South, the collaboration came to tell Western Sydney stories and include traditional Arabic and Vietnamese instrumentation.
Following its release in February 2017, the album has been met with great acclaim, with 4.5 stars from Rolling Stone and 5 stars from The Music.com.
WORKSHOP
11am, Sat 29 Apr, Free
Toby Martin, together with his collaborators on ‘Songs from Northam Avenue’, will host a workshop at Carriageworks.
The one-hour workshop will offer a relaxed environment in which to ask questions about the residency, project and collaborative process behind the album. Learn more about the Vietnamese dan tranh and dan bay, and Arabic qanun – traditional instruments featured in the composition. Discover techniques for cross-cultural collaboration and improvisation, and how to convey character and a sense of place in lyrics.
For ages 15-25; college and high school students and anyone with an interest is welcome, but with room for 30 people, places are limited.
SONGS FROM NORTHAM AVENUE WAS COMMISSIONED BY URBAN THEATRE PROJECTS, 2015.
