CARRIAGEWORKS AND THE CONCH PRESENT

THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA

Lorca’s classic tragedy becomes a vehicle for the exploration of the culture shock of the colonisation of the Pacific. In this new adaptation New Zealand Samoan poet Tusiata Avia transposes Lorca’s pre Spanish civil war indictment of Spanish society into the context of 1910 Samoa under German occupation, where the power of the Catholic church attempt to crush ancient traditions of Fa’a Samoa (The Samoan way). The Conch Artistic Directors Nina Nawalowalo and Tom McCrory collaborate with acclaimed Spanish actor director Antonio Gil Martinez and New Zealand director Colin McColl.
