CARRIAGEWORKS 2018 KEIR CHOREOGRAPHIC AWARD PUBLIC PROGRAM

The Keir Choreographic Award (KCA) Public Program offers a diverse program of performances, workshops, seminars, panels and masterclasses to encourage new directions in contemporary dance. Bringing together members of the international KCA jury with local choreographers, artists, cultural workers and community groups, the public program accompanies the KCA Finals Season in Sydney.

The Carriageworks Keir Choreographic Award Public Program is presented by Carriageworks in partnership with the Keir Foundation, Dancehouse and Australia Council for the Arts, with thanks to Campbelltown Art Centre, Critical Path, Firstdraft, National Gallery of Australia, Runway Australian Experimental Art Journal and University of New South Wales.

Eszter Salamon: Choreographic Lab

Eszter Salamon and Critical Path host an interactive lab examining the relationship between choreography and history.

Black Dance with Ishmael Houston-Jones
Campbelltown Arts Centre

Campbelltown Arts Centre invites First Nation choreographers and performers to participate in a two day workshop with Ishmael Houston-Jones. This workshop will reflect and respond to the idea of ‘Black Dance’ in the Australian context.

Little Orange Workshop with Lucy Guerin
Campbelltown Arts Centre

Little Orange is Campbelltown Art Centre’s inclusive studio for emerging Western Sydney artists with disabilities. Guerin will meet with artists and facilitate a workshop where she will share her performance methodology.

Meg Stuart Masterclass
Carriageworks

In this masterclass, improvisation will be used as a strategy to explore body memory and physical and emotional states. The class will be lead through an investigation of the borders between knowing and not knowing, abstraction and intention, image and action.

SEMINARS, PANELS AND DISCUSSIONS

Eszter Salamon Seminar
School of the Arts & Media, UNSW

Facilitated by Dr Erin Brannigan, this three-hour seminar with Eszter Salamon at UNSW is designed for dance professionals and senior research students in dance and performance. The seminar will cover an orientation to Eszter’s practice including history, biography, gesture, body technologies and the attention-intention relationship.

Eszter Salamon: Speculative history making in the public space of museums

Lost and Found: Ishmael Houston-Jones

A 2 day practical session with Ishmael Houston-Jones engaging Critical Path’s 2018 themes, archive, memory and prediction. The session will also investigate the curatorial process behind Ishmael’s collaborative project platform ‘Lost and Found.’

Runway Issue #36 ‘Dance’: Discussion, panel and performance evening

Runway and Firstdraft present a Q and A with Christophe Slagmuylder, artistic director of the Kunstenfestivaldesarts and KCA jury member, on current and future directions in experimental dance. Australian artist Rhiannon Newton presents new performance work in the Firstdraft courtyard. Runway #36 ‘Dance’ guest editor Lizzie Thomson engages Lucy Guerin, choreographer and KCA jury member, as part of a panel exploring cultural and stylistic lineages and embodied histories in dance.
