Activating Installations

This workshop looks at installation, immersive environments and techniques to activate objects and performance; and strategies from William Burroughs’ concept of the ‘Cut-up’ and the ‘Exquisite Corpse’,  to found materials and performative gesture.

Found objects will be pooled, chosen at random and distributed to each participant. The group will create and present temporal art installations with designated objects and if needed ‘gallery’ accessories (plinths, lights, mobiles, art materials, plastic sheeting/backdrops). An informal series of critiques and Q&As will be conducted.

Recommended for anyone interested in art, performance and play. Artists and performers wanting to test their ideas in a group context are encourage to attend.

RADICALISING THE ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

‘Radicalising the artist biography’ is a workshop on how, as artists, we can re-write and re-imagine ourselves according to our own systems of value.

Ever struggled to put together a ‘brief artist bio’, or wondered why these texts are so formulaic and uninspiring? Work with artists Connie Anthes and Rebecca Gallo to re-imagine these small but important declarations. By rewriting (or drawing, or filming…) ourselves, we will reshape what we do and how we value it – on our own terms, not according to the value systems of institutional and funding bodies.

Make or Break is a collaboration between Connie Anthes and Rebecca Gallo that began in 2015. Make or Break has worked across gallery, institution, festival and nightclub contexts to produce a range of process-based art projects. These have included using galleries as live work spaces; performing personal admin for an audience; co-writing texts; circulating fictional currencies; making books; rewarding invisible labour; and facilitating conversations and workshops as alternatives to traditional forms of research. Through these projects, Make or Break explores the role and visibility of artist labour, process and audiences in the generation of art works and art market value.

Felt and Action Workshop

Artists have long employed materiality and process as a way of evidencing the absence and presence of the body, from Robert Morris, to Wolfgang Laib and Karla Black. In this workshop conversations about the body, materiality and duration unfold while participants explore felting techniques to create three-dimensional forms.

Textile making methods often involve slow processes, repetition and the hand-made, and the objects created carry a trace of the maker. These ‘slow’ objects become the basis for the second part of the workshop, where participants devise and carry out performative actions to activate their felted objects.
