BJORK DIGITAL PARTY #2 ANNOUNCED | MEDIA RELEASE 6 Apr 2016

Due to an overwhelming response to the Opening Night of the world premiere BJÖRK DIGITAL  exhibition, Carriageworks today announced a second night party. To celebrate the opening of the BJÖRK DIGITAL exhibition as part of Vivid Sydney 2016, Björk will travel to Sydney to curate two nights of music at Carriageworks, where she will DJ with special guests for two nights only on Friday 3 June and Saturday 4 June 2016.

Carriageworks is a major precinct for Vivid Sydney 2016, marking the third successful year the Redfern- based contemporary multi-arts centre has been involved in the annual Sydney event that celebrates light, music and ideas. The three-week program at Carriageworks is headlined by work from the iconic Icelandic artist Björk, who was recently crowned best International Female Solo Artist at the 2016 Brit Awards following the success of her most recent album Vulnicura.

Carriageworks Director Lisa Havilah said: “Carriageworks has created a contemporary program for Vivid Sydney that moves across music, installations and food and which will activate the precinct over the full Vivid Sydney three-week period. National and international audiences will experience world premieres, Australian music and unique opportunities to engage with Sydney’s best chefs and creative leaders.”

BJÖRK DIGITAL invites visitors to an exhibition of digital and video works that are the result of Björk’s new collaborations with some of the finest visual artists and programmers in the world. This will be completed by the Australian premiere of Black Lake, an immersive cinema experience featuring a cutting edge surround sound system, where the audience is encased in the claustrophobic and visceral experience of Black Lake. The work is directed by Los Angeles-based filmmaker Andrew Thomas Huang and was filmed in the lava fields of Iceland.

Björk said: “I felt it is time to premiere my recent virtual reality stuff and am delighted to do so in Sydney. We have made seven 360o videos for Vulnicura and I am enthusiastic about this natural continuity of the music video: the intimacy, total merge of surround sound and vision makes VR an ideal home! Looking forward to celebrating it whilst DJ-ing with some good friends there!”

Björk invites audiences to experience for the first time her new work in virtual reality, including Stonemilker – directed by Andrew Thomas Huang, and the world premiere in VR of Jesse Kanda’s brilliantly innovative Mouth Mantra.

A curated program of Björk’s extensive video work will be presented, spanning the artist’s 24 year career during which time she has collaborated with film directors including Academy Award winners Spike Jones, Michel Gondry, Nick Knight and Stephane Sedanaoui.

There will be an additional educational aspect – an immersive multi-media experience showcasing the interactive musical instruments and apps from Biophilia.
Also part of the Vivid program is Curve Ball, a new one-day music festival being held on 11 June 2016 in conjunction with Fuzzy, the team responsible for some of Australia’s best music events. Curve Ball, headlined by ZHU, features a line-up boasting international and local acts who will transform the soaring ceilings and industrial grandeur of Carriageworks’ largest space into an immersive audio – visual experience, and feast for the eyes and ears with intricate sound design and video artistry.

The Vivid Sydney announcement adds further weight to the Carriageworks 2016 Artistic Program, which represents the most ambitious program to date for Australia’s leading contemporary multi-arts precinct. Carriageworks has undergone unprecedented growth over the past four years, welcoming more than 790,000 visitors in 2015. The 2016 Artistic Program brings together a risk-taking, culturally diverse line- up of more than 54 projects, spanning visual arts, dance, performance, film, talks and music which will support over 740 artists.
